REFERRAL PROCEDURE
ALL patients referred to the Oncology Centre MUST be accompanied by a referral letter. This should be accompanied by the results of all investigations (CT’S, MRI’S, Bone Scan, X-Ray, Pathology Reports etc.)
If you received your initial work-up or treatment abroad, you should be accompanied by a medical summary, including any treatment received and your progress to date.
If diagnosis and treatment was obtained in a non – English speaking country, the information MUST be dated and translated into ENGLISH, as we do not offer this service.
CLINIC VISITS
ALL PATIENTS MUST be accompanied by a relative or friend at each clinic visit, particularly at the initial consultation.
Upon arrival, the patient is to check-in at the front desk. This process includes registration, payment of fees which is required by all and a receipt will be issued.
Patients will be called from waiting area to be assessed by a nurse and be given a clinic number. Assessment includes the measuring of blood pressure, pulse rate and weight.
Once this is completed, the patient and a friend/relative will be directed to one of the exam rooms (1, 2, and 3) where they will be seen by the Physician.
Upon completion of your consultation, you will again return to the assessment room where you will receive your next appointment and will be directed with regard to your investigations.
IMPORTANT
Prior to clinic visits all patients’ results must be placed on their charts. This especially pertains to mammograms, bone scans, x-ray, CT scans and blood works. If for any reason the patient is seen by another physician, please bring all pertinent results, documents with you.
Please remember to bring all of the medications you are currently taking with you so that they can be properly documented and reviewed by the Doctor.
CHEMOTHERAPY ADMINISTRATION
Once you have been scheduled for chemotherapy, prior to commencing treatment you will receive an educational session by a nurse to inform you about what to expect during your course of treatment, especially as it pertains to side effects, nutrition etc.
Blood work is requested the day before chemotherapy is administered. It is strongly advised that this be done as early as possible on that day to ensure that if they need to be repeated there is adequate time to do so.
If these investigations are done at a private laboratory the results should either be faxed to us or collected by you and brought in. If results are abnormal your treatment will have to be delayed.
The check in/registration procedure is the same for clinic visits except that treatment will be received in the infusion area.
During chemotherapy one individual is allowed to accompany the patient into the infusion area.
Remember to take all of your medication as you normally do during your chemotherapy unless otherwise advised by the Doctor.
WE HOPE THAT THESE GUIDELINES WILL MAKE THE TIME YOU SPEND HERE TOLERABLE AND COMFORTABLE.
