IT'S CALLED THE CANCER CARING CENTRE
A place of comfort, security, release and peace for patients receiving cancer treatment.
A place where pain management is under took and medical attention is provided in a setting of beauty, tranquility and personal freedom.
A place where family members can visit and linger.
What a welcome relief for any cancer patient who has had to struggle alone!
Where a little boy whose mother needs bedrest during treatment can be with her, where he can play outdoors and plop down to watch TV almost as naturally as if they were at home.
- Where an elderly man from Cat Island, receiving chemotherapy treatment, can stay in Nassau, his wife can be by his side, and his grandchildren are free to come and go.
- Where a young father from Nassau receiving treatment can stay for a few days then go home to his family, knowing that he can stop by the Centre daily for conversation, emotional support and information.
Cancer Caring Centre

A home away from home. A place of comfort for those who need it so badly and for their loved ones who want to make treatment as painless as possible.
Today, it is a $2 million dream (with a further $2 million endowment to subsidize the future operating costs of this much needed facility), which YOU can sustain as a reality tomorrow by becoming a partner with the Cancer Society of The Bahamas.
The Cancer Society of The Bahamas has, with the help of a team of professionals who have volunteered their time and services, launched a campaign to build, open and operate the Cancer Caring Centre.
Convenient Location
The three storey building is located adjacent to the present Cancer Society Headquarters just off Collins Avenue, close to doctors and hospitals. The building houses 10 rooms, each with a patio and garden view. The second floor rooms are reserved for Family Island patients staying in Nassau for short-term treatment. Residents will be encouraged to participate in simple activities such as gardening or preparing meals, to stay active and maintain their self-esteem.
Staff and Volunteers
Full-time staff include an administrator, care givers and security. A doctor is also available on call. A network of volunteers serve to enrich the patients' lives and make their stay as pleasant a possible by:
- visiting patients
- leading daily exercise classes
- giving talks on nutrition
- providing transportation
- helping arrange home visits
- assisting in a thousand and one ways that add up to a million smiles
The Cancer Society of The Bahamas thanks you for making this dream a reality and continuing to support by becoming a partner with us and sending a cheque or making a pledge or bequest.
Receive the recognition you deserve - from your name on a plaque to your name on the building
Imagine if you or a loved one had cancer - What a difference a Cancer Caring Centre could make!
GROUNDBREAKING FOR CANCER CARING CENTRE, TUESDAY, 18TH FEBRUARY, 2003
|
The Cancer Society of The Bahamas recently broke ground for Phase One of its Cancer Caring Centre at the Headquarters site in East Terrace, Centreville. This project, which began in 1995 as a dream of Founding Member, Mrs. Susan Roberts, came a giant step closer to realization as the Society members, medical community, well-wishers and donors gathered at the site for the brief ceremony.
The building, which is designed by the award winning firm of Jackson Burnside Ltd. together with the dedicated team of building professional firms - Contractor: Bro-kell Construction and Building Supplies Limited, Structural Engineer: George V. Cox & Associates, Quality Surveyor: Construction Cost Engineering (Bahamas) Limited, Mechanical Engineers: Mechanical Design & Service Ltd. and Electrical Engineers: Engineering Solutions, will act as a "home away from home" for cancer patients undergoing treatment in Nassau - a place of comfort, security and peace where emotional support is available, pain management is understood and medical attention can be provided in a setting of beauty, tranquility and personal freedom.

It is expected that Phase One of the project which will encompass the construction of 10 rooms, will be completed by the end of the year and Phase Two, which will include the extension of the facility onto the existing structure, will be undertaken in the near future.
"This is a very proud moment for the Cancer Society", stated Society President, Judy Carter. " There is not one family in this country who has not been touched by this disease and this Centre is so necessary, particularly for Family Island patients who have to travel to Nassau for cancer treatment and require a place to stay that is comforting, comfortable and affordable. We dedicated our Headquarters Building in 1991 - this groundbreaking is yet another milestone in our development."
"This project has been eight years in the making", continued Susan Roberts, Society Treasurer. "At an estimated cost of $4 million, we began fundraising in 1998 and are close to the midway mark. We are also grateful for the support of caring citizens in this community without which none of this would be possible. We felt that the public, who over these 27 years of the Society's existence, have always been there for us. Now that ground has been broken the public will see tangible evidence of the progress being made and we appeal to them to continue their support with donations of building materials, fittings and furnishing."
Persons wishing to receive more information about the Centre or to give a donation towards it are asked to contact the Society on 323-4482 or to complete the contribution form.
